Ceylon Black Tea: A Journey of Aromatic Excellence

When it comes to world-renowned teas, Ceylon Black Tea stands tall among the finest. Originating from the picturesque island of Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, this exquisite tea variety has captured the hearts of tea enthusiasts worldwide. Renowned for its rich flavour, vibrant colour, and captivating aroma, Ceylon Black Tea offers a sensory experience that is unparalleled.

We’ve been using Ceylon Black tea in our unique tea blends since we first opened our tea rooms in Rome back in 1893. It’s the base tea we use in our famous Earl Grey Imperial tea, our blend that features bergamot essence, lemon peel and flower petals. We’ve also used Ceylon tea, alongside Darjeeling and Yunnan black teas for our extraordinary Breakfast Tea blend, originally blended in 1950!

A Brief History of Ceylon Tea:

Tea production in Sri Lanka can be traced back to the British colonial era. In the 19th century, the British introduced tea cultivation to Ceylon, transforming the island into a thriving tea-growing nation. The favourable climate and diverse geography of the island provided ideal conditions for tea cultivation, leading to the establishment of numerous tea estates across the country. Today, Sri Lanka is renowned as one of the world's largest exporters of tea, with Ceylon Black Tea being its most celebrated variety.

Characteristics of Ceylon Black Tea:

1. Flavour Profile: Ceylon Black Tea is prized for its distinct flavour profile, which varies depending on the region of cultivation. The tea exhibits a well-balanced, robust character with notes of citrus, chocolate, and even hints of spice. It is known for its bright and brisk taste, making it an ideal choice for both hot and iced tea preparations.

2. Aroma: The aroma of Ceylon Black Tea is truly captivating. As the tea leaves steep, they release a fragrant bouquet that is reminiscent of citrus fruits and flowers. The uplifting aroma adds to the overall sensory experience, making each sip a delightful journey.

3. Colour: One of the distinguishing features of Ceylon Black Tea is its stunning amber-red liquor. When brewed correctly, the tea produces a vibrant infusion that is visually appealing and alluring.

Ceylon Black Tea, with its exceptional flavour, captivating aroma, and vibrant colour, is a true testament to Sri Lanka's rich tea heritage.
