Black tea, known as “red tea” in China, is produced with fully oxidized leaves of the Camelia Sinensis. The tea plant contains vitamins, minerals, polyphenols and caffeine, which help us improve performance and concentration.
Common thought is that black tea contains more caffeine than green or white teas; this however is not the case. Caffeine is present in all teas and the quantity of the caffeine depends on many factors such as the quality of the teas, the altitude (often high grown teas are more premium), the terroir, the age of the tea plants, and most importantly the brewing (water temperature and infusion time).

OUR STORY
Babingtons was opened in 1893 in Rome by two ladies, Anna Maria Babington from Derbyshire and Isabel Cargill, who’s Scottish father founded Dunedin, the capital of the South Island of New Zealand.
To begin with, Babingtons was a tea and reading room for the British in Rome, but soon became an institution for Romans first, and then for the world. A sitting room at the feet of the Spanish Steps, in Piazza di Spagna, where tea time experience is celebrated with a Victorian, yet quirky, manner.
At the beginning of the year 2000, Chiara Bedini and Rory Bruce, 4th generation descendants of Isabel Cargill, introduced a fine collection of bespoke black, green, oolong and white tea blends as well as a premium selection of single origin teas from India, Sri Lanka, China, Nepal, Japan and Taiwan.
Perhaps most significantly, to celebrate our 125th anniversary in 2018, we launched 125-Miss Babington. “We wanted a black tea blend which told our story and that could be appreciated by everyone. A rich, elegant blend which could be enjoyed by grown-ups and children. By those who like their tea with milk and sugar and by those who take their tea pure. A black tea blend which would pair perfectly with the Victorian sponge cake and with scones, our two iconic sweets”.
Babingtons’ tea blender chose two premium black teas from the high plantations situated in the Dimbula region of Sri Lanka, known for its full bodied, brisk, delightful teas and a wonderful China black tea (red tea for the Chinese) from the Yunnan province, the cradle of tea, known for its extraordinary teas full of tips and with delicate caramel and vanilla hints. The black teas are then mixed with precious York rose petals, blueberries, elderflower, lemon myrtle, juniper berries and vanilla pieces, treating us to a mouth-watering tea.
A rich, inspiring blend, to celebrate our rich, inspiring story!
