Bergamot in Earl Grey Tea

When it comes to classic teas, few are as iconic and beloved as Earl Grey. Its distinct flavour and aroma have captivated tea enthusiasts for centuries. While the base tea blend plays a crucial role, it is the addition of bergamot that elevates Earl Grey to extraordinary heights. Our Earl Grey Imperial tea blend has a base of Ceylon Black Tea to not overwhelm the bergamot fruit.

Bergamot, scientifically known as Citrus bergamia, is a small citrus fruit primarily grown in the Calabria region of Italy. It is a cross between a bitter orange and a lemon, but its unique flavour sets it apart. The fruit is roughly the size of an orange but has a distinctive pear-like shape. Interestingly, bergamot is not typically consumed as a fruit due to its sour and bitter taste. Instead, it finds its true calling in the world of tea.

Bergamot oil:

Bergamot oil is derived from the rind of the bergamot fruit. It is known for its distinctive floral and citrusy fragrance, which infuses Earl Grey tea with its captivating aroma. The oil is carefully extracted and then added to the black tea blend during the production process, imparting its unique flavour profile.

The flavour profile:

The flavour profile of bergamot is best described as a harmonious balance between floral, citrus, and slightly bitter notes. When combined with the robustness of black tea, bergamot creates a tea that is simultaneously refreshing, aromatic, and soothing. It adds a layer of complexity to the tea, making each sip a delightful experience for the senses.

Benefits of Bergamot:

Apart from its contribution to the flavour and aroma of Earl Grey tea, bergamot offers several potential health benefits. It is rich in antioxidants, which help combat free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the body. Bergamot may also aid in digestion, support cardiovascular health, and have mood-lifting properties.
